How to buy PortWall and get your licence key

Order the edition you need in the PortWall customer portal at portwall.net/billing. Once the invoice is paid, your licence key appears on the service's page in the portal; enter it when PortWall's installer or setup asks for it.

Ordering

Every step of placing an order in the portal is in Ordering a PortWall product.

  1. Open the PortWall products in the customer portal.
  2. Choose your edition: a Windows edition for each Windows server, or an appliance edition with the number of CPU cores you need. Not sure which? See Choosing an edition and Prices.
  3. Under Choose billing cycle: pick Monthly, or Annually for 12 months for the price of 10, and fill in Server name: a name that tells this licence apart from your others, for example web-01.
  4. Check out: sign in, or create your customer account, and confirm the order.
  5. Pay the invoice the portal raises.

Each licence covers one Windows server, or one appliance. For several servers, order one licence for each, or write to [email protected] for a volume quote. Enterprise editions and appliances over 32 cores are quoted by sales.

Where to find your licence key

Your licence is created as soon as the invoice is paid. To see it:

  1. Sign in to the customer portal.
  2. Open Services and choose your PortWall licence.
  3. The Your PortWall licence panel shows the Licence key, with a Copy button, and the licence's status, plan, licensed CPU cores (appliance), the date it is valid until, the server it is active on and when that server last checked in.

Keep the key private: anyone holding it can use your licence.

Activating the key

The licence activates within a minute and binds to that server. The portal then shows the server it is active on.

Getting the installer

To get the Windows installer or the appliance image, open the download page at portwall.net/download, which has the Windows web installer with its SHA-256 checksum and links to the appliance images.

For Windows, the download is portwall-install.exe, a small web installer of about 6.6 MB: it asks for your licence key, downloads the current PortWall installer (about 180 MB), checks its checksum and opens it with the key already filled in. The installer needs your licence key, because releases are available to licensed servers only. The full installer, portwall-setup-.exe, is no longer downloadable by itself: releases are available to licensed servers only, through portwall-install.exe. The appliance images are still downloaded from the same page. See Install PortWall on Windows Server and Install the PortWall Linux appliance.

Moving the licence to another server

You can move a licence yourself: enter the key on the new server. The old server stops being licensed after its grace period. Moving to another server, or a change of the server's public address, uses one change from an allowance of two in 30 days (a change of public address counts as a move); reinstalling on the same server does not. The portal shows how many changes are left. If you need to move after the allowance is used, open a ticket and we will release the licence for you. See Licences, editions and licence states.

If the invoice is not paid

An unpaid licence is suspended. Your PortWall installation keeps protecting you for a short grace period, after which blocking steps back while detection carries on. Paying the outstanding invoice restores it straight away, with nothing to set up again. See Licences, editions and licence states.
